Governor Closes all Minnesota Schools Next Monday! How Cold Will it Be in Your State?

I contacted my D’s school this morning and informed them she would not be in attendance next monday due to weather nearing -50 to -70 below zero once windchill is factored in. I was not the first parent of a student taking public transportation that called. Within a few hours of my call, our Governor, Mark Dayton, declared all public schools in the State of Minnesota will not be in session on Monday due to the dangerous temperatures. Privates usually shut down before publics declare a closure, so I am sure D’s school would not be open anyway.

What’s the weather like or going to be like through early next week in your area?

In the Detroit area, we have a winter storm watch posted for Sunday to Monday at 1 am with expected lows in the negative numbers, -2 on Monday, -9 on Tuesday. I won’t be at all surprised if the kids have a snow day Monday and a cold day Tuesday. Our buses won’t be able to start at -9. They don’t plug them to keep the engine blocks warm and they use diesel gas that gels, apparently. I’m not mentioning that to my son because he might not bother doing his homework if he thinks school may be canceled, so shhhhhh!

I can’t even fathom temps like that. How do your pipes keep from freezing? How do livestock survive if they don’t have heated barns? How do animals in the wild ever survive these kinds of winters?

Dallas will get into the teens overnight on Sunday/Monday, but highs will be above freezing.

Take care.

What Barnard said.

Our power went out this morning (luckily it’s back on) but we’re stocking up on wood just in case.

I remember once in high school, ALL area schools closed except ours due to the cold- which was even crappier due to the fact that we’re the only school in the area that I know of where you have to walk outside to go to class (my high school had four buildings). Only ~1,000 of the students of the 6k+ students showed up so they didn’t end up counting the day anyway. One girl got frostbite and sued the district. Not sure what ever happened with the case, but our SI did not have a job after the year ended.

70°F and sunny on Monday. It’s hard to live in Southern California.

How does a city even function in -50° weather?

Not sure about farm animals since we live in the Metro with 3+ million other people, but I am sure most farms have heated barns or devise methods to keep the farm animals warm.

We just turn the heat up to keep pipes from freezing. Our issue will be crazy folks who think they can weather the cold. We already had one teen die from being out in the cold and another that will lose all her limbs. Another issue will be frozen cars that will not start. I also have 2 fire places and lots of wood. It’s been below zero most of December, but Sunday and Monday will be record lows or close to record lows. We have not had weather this cold in almost 20 years.

We’ve got a cold day in Florida with 45 degrees, but the weekend will be back at 80 degrees. Can’t wait for our weather to be back. This “winter” is cramping my style.

I am in central Iowa, it is already terribly cold here. My thermostat at home is set on 80and it is only 68 in my apartment. S’s school superintendent emailed last night saying he was keeping an eye on things for Monday and would let us know asap after a decision was made about school for Monday.

D has had major lung issues as a young teenager, she has had surgery on both lungs and can not breathe when it is this cold. This is why we chose a warm weather college for her. She is leaving on Saturday (a week earlier than needed) to head south, where it is much warmer and easier for her to breathe.

My horsey has a really really warm blanket, that and hair will keep him warm enough. We’ve had temps as low as -20 in recent memory and there were no problems besides school buses not starting. I am hoping if it is that cold they will keep the horses inside (no heat but no wind either)… typically they are always outside at night in case there is a fire when nobody is there. I wonder what the wind chill will end up being on Tuesday. Our local schools were not closed yesterday despite GOD AWFUL road conditions, but was closed today due to the cold even though the roads were better than yesterday. I think they were only closed because parents complained about yesterday, so it will be interesting to see if we remain closed on Monday or Tuesday. My district said they have a guideline that they will not close unless there is 7in of snow which seems excessive to me… anything over 3in can make the roads a nightmare when the plows don’t come until after rush hour, it’d be nice if they’d LOOK OUTSIDE when they make that call.

I remember going to school one day when it was -20, after being up all night not doing homework because I expected a “cold day,” and when I got to school the heat was broken. The heat was broken and they still didn’t cancel school! They had it up by lunch time but it was a cold morning.

We lost power for a couple of days a while ago when it was only just going into the high 30’s, if we lose power now we will have to find a relative to stay with or go to a hotel. No amount of firewood would make that bearable!

I am more afraid of icy roads and temps in the twenties than I am of subzero temps…you can dress for cold and it is too cold for the snow to melt and refreeze on the roads in subzero weather

When we had our ice storm, we lost power. Our house was 49 degrees inside. But under a mountain of blankets, we were completely snug in bed. But get out to go to the bathroom with a flashlight, and it was very uncomfortable.

Made me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder books when she wrote of waking up in their wooden farmhouse with ice or snow on the outside covers but warm and cozy underneath them while in bed with her sister. Yikes we are spoiled.

^^^Yes, yes, yes! I also remember from those books how she would have to break the layer of ice on the bowl of water in which they washed their faces in the morning.

When I went to Marquette we had air temp of -26F, wind chill of -80+. Classes were not cancelled! I don’t recall the Milwaukee school system shutting down either.

Snow day yesterday and cold day today. Expecting snow day Monday and perhaps Tuesday. We don’t have buses but we are a drive/carpool/walk district so if there’s a need the schools will close.

I know of very few people with heated barns. Animals are kept inside the barn which helps with the wind chill, fed more, and water and animals are checked often. Heat lights are on the babies. During really extreme temps, preemies and/or sick newborns which will be bottle-fed are sometimes brought into the house. I see 40% of my clients at my in-home office and the best advertising I ever had was a baby goat that lived in my kitchen for a few weeks. (in a large box)

Wind chills next Mon-Tues -20 here. School doesn’t resume until Tues, but it will probably be at least delayed or more likely canceled. It’s a rural area. A winter storm watch has already been issued for Sun-Mon. I am SO done with winter!

I’m in Michigan also, and I’m supposed to start my new student teaching gig on Monday. Looks like it might be my first snow day instead!

Supposed to be -19 Sunday night here, -20 Monday night. I expect schools to be closed two days. Don’t want kids waiting for the school bus in those temps. It was -11 here last night which really isn’t much different once you reach a certain point. Schools were open but it warmed up to 14 during the day. The high temp Monday is supposed to be -11.

Water to the outside spigots is turned off. Pipes here don’t run through exterior walls, just through the basement and interior walls.

The Packer game late Sunday afternoon will be interesting. Probably not as cold as the Ice Bowl but not by much.

I’m in northern lower Michigan. It is cold. I just had Mormon missionaries at my front door. What were they thinking! It’s warmed up today-to 11 degrees! The thing I noticed was that they were in dress shoes, it is way too cold for dress shoes. Shaking my head.

Our lake effect is predicted to be bad on Monday so between the cold and snow, I can’t imagine they would have school. Unlike Lake Erie, we still get lake effect when it gets really cold.

Temp in NYC has gone up to 16 degrees from 10. Snow and winds this morning closed the NYC public schools (snow day :D).

Middle Tennessee here- expecting 3-4 degrees Monday morning with a high of about 15degrees. That is unbelievable for here, and I am NOT looking forward to it. Was 13 degrees this morning and it took me longer to get dressed to run than to do the run itself!
