I never said I didn’t like the sweltering heat or 100% humidity.
But my friends in the south (particularly Atlanta and Austin) complain about it. They avoid going outside the same way many of us in the north are right now.

I gotcha, sally.
I think it’s a load of hooey as, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not going to put your life in danger by driving like we do here in the north.
OTOH, they face the same issues wrt homeless and poor/elderly populations: they overheat and we can freeze to death. Neither can be pleasant and I’m glad there are warming and cooling stations.

Driving is never going to be as big a risk in the heat and humidity. Staying alive if you cannot keep cool is huge oroblem for them, particularly when the grid is overloaded.

I get hives from cold OR hot–I am a delicate flower! Fortunately, my kids do NOT take after me in those respects. S is doing pretty well in chilly VA, we think. No word from him, which we figure is good news–usually that has been the pattern. :)

Extreme weather is dangerous whether it’s cold or heat. The fact that winter affects road conditions is a big deal, but at least I am not going to dehydrate and pass out or burn my skin as long as I am dressed appropriately. I’d say it’s lose/lose between extreme heat and extreme cold!

I decided I’m just going to get the AWD after all, I am waiting to hear if they have a car for me with the specifications I wanted. This winter has convinced me.

My son gets hives from heat. I mean, he is covered. whether hot shower or hot temps or much exercise.

I get hives from lots of things, but not usually heat or cold.

I would get AWD if I lived where you live, ema.

Oh, yes other things give me hives as well but am happy hot showers do NOT give me hives. I love hot showers! Shellfish, wearing Maile leis, and a few other things generate hives. The list is already long enough. :). I get hives if I try to run for 1/4 mile or longer. Oh well, my heart races anyway, so no marathoning for me!

Here we go again- school is closed for tomorrow due to wind chills predicted to be at negative 30. I am odd, I guess. I would rather live with these temps then where it is very hot and sticky. I can always add more clothes and go outside but I can only take so many off :))

Gosh, HImom. I feel so sorry for you…living in HI and not being able to wear certain leis or eat shellfish…

Meanwhile, my son has been filling me in on the “gorgeous” weather he has been having since he got back to his school a week ago. It’s 66 and sunny there today and everyone has been outside pretty much nonstop when they aren’t in class or sleeping.

@onward - yes, some schools are closed here already for two days, Monday and Tuesday.

There was an article in the ann arbor news the other day about all the schools in the local districts and how many snow days they’ve had this year, since they only get 5 or so. One district had to close once earlier this season because a student vandalized all the buses, and now they are out of snow days and will have to do make up days-- I hope that kid feels stupid.

Until you get a quick downpour. ;)

Wow. This is pretty cool. I’ve never met (or talked to) people who get hives from temperatures. I’m not alone!

Oy…it’s quite the experience, HImom! I love (or loved…) hot showers. But I’d rather not face the discomfort so I keep my time limited…

sally, tell your son he’s lucky! No beautful weather here today, although yesterday afternoon was top notch.

-10 real temps with -30+ realfeels tomorrow night.
Only one school closing for tomorrow. I suspect some of the privates will close and then probably some more on Tuesday.

Yes, I’m guessing they’ll be closed Tuesday. I’m having a really hard time getting myself to leave the house for anything. Someone invited me over for dinner tonight and I declined, citing laundry and homework, which I was doing, but part of the reason was also that I really didn’t want to go out there.

Actually, I manage fine. It was interesting that one of the allergists I met at National Jewish’s world renown allergy department was not familiar with people who got hives from cold AND heat. My Sis-IL, a dermatologist didn’t find it unusual at all, tho I’m not sure whether she has patients who have those sensitivities.

Niquii, if you wear sunblock 50 or higher, do you still get the blotches of red patches? Personally, I try to listen when my body turns and itchy red, cause I figure it’s not a good sign and I prefer living in harmony with it.

I am fine as long as I’m not RUNNING because my legs do NOT perspire, so they get red and swollen because they can’t get rid of the heat (at least that’s my theory). I can wear whatever I want, as long as I keep my core temp and limbs fairly comfortable in temp. I have a lot of warm clothing, like thermals and icebreakers.

Still haven’t heard lately from S who is NOT familiar with driving in ice, snow and cold, as he started driving in HI & CA. He’s in VA/DC now, which is a pretty big adjustment, especially with this cold spell of weather.

So this is kind of maddening–every other school district in our area is closed except ours (the biggest). We have many low-income kids who do not have warm enough clothes for regular winter circumstances, and many of all income levels who take buses to and from school. ALL the surrounding areas, including many suburban districts where some of our teachers live, have closed (many for both today and tomorrow). So what happens when a whole bunch of teachers don’t make it in? It’s the first day of the second semester, too. I guess I should be glad we won’t be going into late June to make up classes, but it’s annoying.

I’m hearing from people in Wisconsin about heating fuel shortages there. People running low, and not being able to refill. That is frightening in these frigid temperatures.

Just saw a map of predicted snow and ice in Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Northern Florida, and the Carolinas. Sheesh!

Stay safe out there, everyone.

Anybody notice this all started when Frozen was released???

Well, I’m off work today, and I suspect tomorrow as well. That means I won’t be able to retire until the 1st week of June the earliest.

Curious what some have said about hives . My son has cold urticaria. It only comes about with a narrow combination of cold/humidity, so very rare. When I first brought him to a doctor, I was lucky that the doctor recognized it because he himself had it.
