Governor Closes all Minnesota Schools Next Monday! How Cold Will it Be in Your State?

My mother grew up in northern Ontario and use to tell us about the ice on the outhouse seat!

My dogs have always loved winter. My current dog is a field spaniel and he doesn’t have a lot of coat but boy, he loves the snow and the cold. 18 below this morning and he wants to fetch balls. We disappointed him.

Two of my daughters are flying back from a winter internship on Sunday. They fly from Los Angles to Detroit and home to Iowa. I see there is a predicted 4-6 inches of snow for Detroit Sunday. Any input on the status of the Detroit airport at this point?

Ema, you could read online but I think you just want to warm them up and get the water flowing (maybe use a hairdryer?). It’s far easier to try to prevent it from happening. I am no expert, so please get advice from more knowledgeable people. All I know is it can be a major (and costly) headache if the pipes burst after freezing.

I was supposed to pick up several friends tonight from the airport flying in from the west coast (through Minneapolis). All of their flights have been delayed until tomorrow. We’ll see if they get through.

I’m hoping they’ll route through somewhere other than Minneapolis and/or Chicago for their best chance of getting here.

Stay warm, everyone!

Our faucet under our kitchen sink is sometimes of a concern because it runs on the back wall of the house and our house is old. A plumber once told us when it’s bitterly cold to leave the door under the sink open to help keep it from getting too cold. Has seemed to help.

AHS, what time is their flight?? Detroit got probably 10 inches or so on Thursday but that should be cleared by now. I live an hour away from Detroit Metro and the news just said that we should expect a 2-3 inches upon waking up Sunday but that the bulk of the snow (and cold) will come Sunday afternoon with the temp really dropping Sunday night.

Oh, sally, don’t be so cold hearted! Nobody in this thread is gloating.

If I would rank the “pleasantness” of summers of those three states I would say FL, CA, then AZ. I’m sure in the summers the residents of the se states will be sipping sangria with you. ;)

AHS- I’m less than 10 miles from the Detroit airport so if they get stuck or need anything, PM me. Probably the good news is that if their flight from LA to DTW is delayed, the flight to Iowa will probably be delayed also.

abasket,
Thanks for your reply! They arrive to Detroit @ 4:45pm Sunday and leave for Iowa at 8:20pm. I’m getting nervous…they don’t have coats (their internships were in Hawaii) and college starts back up on Monday morning.

My D is flying into Detroit tomorrow with layover in Vegas. A nice parent told me last year to avoid the winter Chicago layovers at all costs.

Now I get it.

My company sent us an email today saying that we can all wear jeans to work on Monday and Tuesday due to the cold. Hopefully they will have hot chocolate for us!

Bless your heart 2016BarnardMom!

I am already freaking out about my poor little Chihuahua. I have some “pee pads” and might just have him go on the back porch on them. He is miserable and has been spending all his time burrowed under blankets. (OK, he does that year-round but he seems especially unwilling to come out right now.)

Our dog is a beagle/ Rhodesian ridgeback/boxer, & he has to wear his coat when it is raining.
You should have seen him when it snowed. Little Mr. Sensitive.
He picks up his feet to have them dried off.
Big change from our lab, who loved weather, even wind & rain.

LOL
Mid-70s with sunshine in Southern California

Carleton College is having classes on Monday.

Another who is near DTW if your Ds need anything, AHS!

We had a funny “only in the north” kind of thing happen at work today. The door to the office froze shut and would not open! We had to kick it.

S is flying with a connection in Chicago tomorrow. This trip back to college has been a nightmare. His original flight was canceled. We bought another ticket on another airline and had to pay quite a bit ($200) more. Now the original flight looks like it is back on. Really? I hope it all works out and he gets back safely. The money part bugs me, but the time and stress to try to reorganize is even worse.

Having one kid go to school in Midwest (from CA), I’m quite sure we had a weather/travel snafu every year, and yes, ended up spending more $ to get kid back to campus. The surprise was the kid who went to school in SC actually got stranded overnight in DC because of the 3" of snow SC got! And I believe he also got stranded overnight in Houston due to severe thunderstorm. Yep, costly and stressful. But they all got there safely–eventually.

“My mom is on vacation in Florida right now and it’s only 46 at the moment.”

My parents live in south Florida and when my mom called yesterday she was telling me how cold it was. When I asked she said 60!
