> GPA 3.0's and Auto Insurance Discounts

Just a note to remind everyone to make sure your auto insurer applies the discounts for 3.0’s. I just won a massive argument with Geico over D’s accident - they weren’t accepting the court’s “not guilty” finding, and insisted on charging me the higher premium - anyway, finally won that argument and got the adjustment, but along the way, realized I also wasn’t getting the discount for her gpa > 3.0.

She faxed over her degree audit, and they’ve credited back enough money so that I won’t have to make another auto insurance payment until sometime after Q1 2007.

I’m so mad at them at the moment I’m considering demanding the interest the money would’ve earned, but guess the time to argue would cost more money in the long run.

Also, if your student has an AA/AS degree or any degree beyond high school, many insurance companies will give you the good student discount for that driver as well.

Also, at our ins company, you don’t get the discount retroactively.

In other words, if I send in a grade report in April, they won’t “credit” the good student discount back to January. You have to make sure to send in the transcripts immediately after the 1st of the year. Inevitably, I forget to do it and always take a hit—don’t know if many other companies out there are set up similarly.

My All-State agent sent us a request for copy of latest grade report, so we had no problems having verification before the next billing.

My S gets two discounts: good grades and “distant student” (over 200 miles). My D has a car at school and is at 178 miles, so all she gets is the good grades one.

Note that you can (with some insurance companies) remove the kid from the policy entirely (while they’re away) and put them back on as needed. My husband does that with the motorcycle policy; they’re only on it in the summer.
