I’m just wondering what someones chances are if they have an 88 average (3.3) UW, and an ACT of 32. Obviously there are more factors that go into an admissions decision than just the numbers, but I’m curious if you someone could just speak on the numbers. Also, does SMU look at UW or Weighted gpa?
A 32 ACT is a very solid score and some universities offer automatic full tuition scholarships for students with a 32–the University of Alabama is one example.
An ACT score of 32 puts you above the average ACT score at SMU which last year I think was 29–not sure about this years applicants.
To answer your question about GPA, SMU will accept either weight or unweighted–whichever your school sends. This is taken directly from the SMU admissions page:
What is the GPA requirement?
There is no absolute “cutoff” for grades. Classroom performance would generally present competitive applicants in the top quarter of their high school class. The difficulty of curriculum and competitive nature of the high school are also important factors in the admission process.
I hope this helps and best of luck.
@doresearch thanks for the response! do you think the two are a combination that would put me in good standing?
@trojman2234 Each applicant pool is different, and each year the applicants seem to have higher GPA’s and test scores.
My personal opinion (remember, I am not in admissions, nor do I work for SMU) is if you have taken a challenging course load with as many AP classes as you can (or that your school offers) are ranked in a least the top 25% of your graduating class, have solid letters of recommendation and excellent essays that you stand a good to excellent chance of being accepted.
SMU is an amazing school and I would encourage you to visit if you have not already done so.
Best of luck.
@trojman2234 To compare all applicants on an even playing field, will look at unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale.
