GPA Drop

I’m kind of new to posting so sorry if I don’t exactly know how this works. I’ve been able to maintain a solid cumulative 3.7 GPA all throughout high school, but my grades dropped Junior year second semester. I got a 3.1 term GPA, and my cumulative GPA dropped to a 3.6. The reason why my grades dropped is because I was sick for at least two weeks; one week at the beginning/middle of the semester and one week at the end. I ended up missing projects, essays, and multiple tests. I go to a big school, so I had to find out what I missed from other students because the teachers have too many students to keep track of. I had so much homework piled on that I could not finish some until about two weeks later, and the teachers took off quite a bit of credit for it. Also, I was cut from the lacrosse team and then put back on as JV Captain (weird story). It affected me quite a bit emotionally and mentally. As a result, I put more time into that to prove myself, and it affected my grade. I wouldn’t come home until 10 pm some days. I am a senior now, and although I have a rigorous schedule, I believe that I can keep a high term GPA this semester, but I want to know how my GPA drop will look to colleges. Should I send a letter or something else to explain my uncharacteristic drop in grades?

Also, at my school, missing two weeks is like missing 20% of lecture for that semester.

I would talk with your guidance counselor and have him/her address the issues in their part of the application.

That’s not really that significant of a drop. You’ll be fine.
