I am looking at a couple schools, and they explained to me that I would need to submit a pre read in july to determine my academic chances of getting in. Do you think a 4.0 W and 3.8 UW GPA with 1480 SAT would be able to pass the pre read for brown or dartmouth. My school doesn’t have AP’s for history and english and we dont weight honours classes so my gpa is a bit low, but I take basically the most rigorous classes(except I take AB instead of BC). Let me know your honest opinion.
Not sure if this will be helpful or not - when my daughter was a recruit for a non-revenue sport at Ivys plus other competitive D1 programs - it was pretty consistent across all schools (except the big publics) that hitting a 34 ACT was desired. She was coming from in independent school with a track record at most of these schools and good rigor, top 15% in her class plus consistent leadership activities within the school.
Have you asked coaches about your score? Are you open to retaking the test? If yes, communicate to coaches you have booked another sitting or two.
Just my opinion based on her experience and others both male and female in her sport.
Lastly, no coach ever told her they were concerned with her preread and made it sound like she would pass and she did for all schools that submitted. She just took their advice and retested to get to the higher score and made one class adjustment as recommended by one school to add to her senior schedule. They seemed to be really open with her and it allowed her to submit her preread with their feedback incorporated.
I don’t think it will be an issue, though it may ultimately depend on how much of an impact you will make on the team and who strong academically top recruits are. With tests being back in play, so will traditional AI calculations.
I think that you should be fine but as @TonyGrace mentioned it very likely will come down to how much impact the coach sees you bringing to the team. For an impact player you are in good shape but you would probably not be someone who was recruited to help out the team AI. If you are a player who falls in the middle and might make an impact down the road it could come down to what the pipeline is for impact players and what if anything is needed from practice players in terms of helping the AI.
My honest opinion is you are probably fine, but even better is the opinion of the coaches. If they’ve been there for a while they have a sense of what will pass the preread and what won’t. They won’t submit your materials if they think you have no chance, they don’t want to waste a preread spot, which are not unlimited.
Your SAT converts to a 33 ACT score. I was always told that the Ivies had more leeway on the academics than the NESCACs. Assuming this is true, that’s another bit of evidence that you should be fine.
The coach will be able to tell you. We found it varied by school (Ivies). But, the higher the better. If you are considering retaking SAT or taking the ACT, I wouldn’t hesitate if you are aiming for an Ivy. The better your academic case with admissions, the more attractive you are to coaches. I’d also encourage you to look at other top academic schools and LACs. Good luck!
Agree with others: ask the coach.
This varies so much by school, sport, year that’s it’s hard to be definitive unless you’re the coach.
I’m guessing the coach will tell you not to waste time on additional testing but it’s better to ask the coach than listen to the guess of a stranger on the internet.
