GPA from Two Seperate Universities

I was wondering how graduate admissions officers/departments consider grades from two separate Universities in undergraduate work. Unfortunately, I find myself below the minimum GPA requirement (around a 2.8-2.9 at Duke, with a senior year upward trend) for most History MA programs.

However, before coming to Duke I took around 12 classes at a less than stellar state school (Marshall University) and had a 4.0. Will graduate programs consider this when evaluating my application? I have looked for this topic on this forum and apologize if it has already been discussed.

I am worried that I might be wasting my time and getting my hopes up about attending graduate school. I have been checking out a few programs–specifically Tulane, W and M, UNC–Greensboro, U of Colorado, etc–and am general am worried that I have no shot because of my poor GPA. Thanks in advance for the advice.

If you have excellent research/experience AND excellent LOR (from prof that personally know you, especially famous prof/emeritus/nobel laureate etc) in your field, I’d say give it a shot.

Someone with 2.4 GPA, 5 years of experience (and couple publications), excellent LOR, decent GRE got in top 5 grad school.
