GPA Importance?

Hi everyone!

Alright, I’m 15 and a dual-enrolled high school student. I will be graduating from my small local college Northern Michigan University with a biology-physiology degree when I’m 18. So far, I have a 4.0 in college, but am going to obtain a B in my liberal studies English class. I’m afraid what this will do to my chances to get into a quality medical school, and am considering dropping the class to get a W instead of the B. Does this make sense for me to do? Or will this B even matter to med school admissions?

I have less than a week to decide, and have no clue what to do.

Thanks very much!

do not drop for a b

Your problem getting into any medical school will be your age, not a B. Slow down. In fact, slow down a bunch. You are not helping your chances.

How are you going to be able to graduate with a double major by the age of eighteen. Are you even in any high school classes.

You need to find out what is the average MCAT score and GPA of students admitted into the med school you are hoping to attend. Then you should look at how far this B will lower your GPA, but your age will most likely hurt your chances of getting into med school. It will probably seem odd to the med school admission board to see an 18 year old applying to med school.

Do NOT drop! And, yes, your age will be more an obstacle than a “B”.

Don’t drop the B.

And U Chicago accepted a 12 year old into their MD/PhD program in 2002/3, so 18 will certainly not be unheard of (assuming you can prove your maturity and dedication to medicine). Getting into a top medical school will also require research and super ECs, not just a perfect GPA.

^Well, yes, there was Michael Jackson at age 5 and others (Amadeus…), should we ever consider miracles? Shoud not we focus on reasonable assumptions here? And U of Chicago accepts very uniques individauls, regular “normal” pre-meds have hardest time getting there. Again, should we keep in mind one Medical School? Well, 18 might not be too unique for Chicago, maybe you do need to be 12.
