GPA Necessary For Elite Colleges From Choate, Lawrenceville, St. Paul's?

Hello, I am a parent of a boarding school applicant. He is likely to get into Choate, Lawrenceville, or St. Paul’s for the upcoming year. He’s an athlete recruit with 99th percentile SSAT. Coaches are very interested, etc.

He wants to attend an elite college, and I have heard that top prep schools can lessen your odds because it’s harder to get top grades, and you’re competing with tons of hooked applicants. I think my kid is very, very smart, but probably not going to graduate in the top decile.

What kinds of colleges are realistic for an applicant in the top 1/3 of the class with a 3.8 GPA from Choate/Lawrenceville/St. Paul’s? I am assuming he won’t be recruited for his sport for college. He is not a legacy and won’t have any hooks.

Is ED to a T15 realistic? Or should he aim lower?

(I know that SPS has a 7.0 GPA scale)
