I’m a first year at Bowdoin College thinking of transferring to either Pomona College or Claremont Mckenna fall of 2009. I had my first semester GPA come out and I got 3 A-'s and 1 A. I was wondering if admissions officers weigh more heavily the fact that I got an A (despite the minus) or just glance at the GPA.

Also, where do most students transfer from? Is it most likely that my competition pool for Pomona and CMC are transferring from similarly ranked schools like I am?

One last thing: I am currently in the process of amending my course schedule. I am also transferring because Bowdoin’s Asian Studies program is not as good and do not offer Korean like Pomona and Claremont. Would it be best to take an Asian Studies course again (I took one last semester) to show them I am really passionate about Asian Studies?

Well, whether they “glance” at your GPA or look at your transcript’s individual grades… they’ll basically see the same thing: an A student in a highly regarded school.

None of us are admissions officers (unless one shows up on your thread ), but I think you can assume they look closely at your transcript to see what type of courses you took and how you did in each.

Hard to say whether you should take the Asian Studies course, without knowing what you’ve already taken and what the typical curriculum is for first year Asian Studies majors at Pomona or CMC.

um, what? they’re not classifying students like that. somebody with A-'s throughout college and a 3.67 gpa is not an “A” student in the same vein that somebody who gets A’s throughout college and has a 4.0 gpa is an A student

regardless, it looks like OP’s gpa will be very strong

Thank you, andale, our post was very helpful. however, I would still like to know the answer, if available, to my second question. Where to most transfer students to schools like Pomona transfer from? Are most of them from California CC’s or are they from peer schools like Bowdoin?

Your HS record will still be very important at this stage and your SAT scores. The college GPA is fine for a real shot if your stats could have gotten you in as a freshmen. Pomona, I believe, is a bit more selective than Bowdoin but CMC should be about on par.
