gpa query, thanks

I’m a senior who currently has a 3.74 GPA, though I hope to be able to raise it a bit. I know that this cuts my chances somewhat, since I’m in a pool with lots of brilliant 4.0s and plenty of those get rejected. >_<

I was just wondering about some other things that might be a factor…nobody gets a 4.0 at the school I attend, one of the highest ever I think was a 3.89. Also, I’ve taken 11 APs and had some health problems that hurt my performance in soph/junior year. I’m captain of the math and science teams (asian girl though, so this is probably common) and I’ve won some national writing awards in addition to some other stuff…I work very hard and I don’t think I’m too stupid (hopefully)

Anyway, I’m not asking for chances. I just want to know how badly the GPA hurts. Please be honest and harsh if necessary! :)

Fortunately, your GPA will be reflected in context of the other students in your school. If you look at the form that your GC must send in he/she will be answering questions like: weighted GPA, rank, difficulty of curriculum studied, highest possible GPA for school, highest received GPA for your class. These questions will help to put you and your school in context of the other applicants.

Your GPA will be looked at in the context of the school. That’s why there are questions about class rank. Even if your school doesn’t have an official rank they are likely to say something that indicates that you are a top student. My son had B’s in English every year but senior year. Admittedly he had the advantage of being a legacy, but if you have other things you are bringing to the table (like national writing awards) a couple of B’s can be overlooked.
