Wondering if I can get some help on this. A junior has a 2.8 GPA, meaning from their freshman and sophomore years. This junior is wanting a 3.0 GPA by the end of this school year for scholarship reasons. What GPA would they need for these next 2 semesters to reach the 3.0? This is unweighted. I’ve tried adding up GPA points and diving by # of classes but things haven’t come up correctly. I don’t know if I’ve made errors or if there’s some misunderstanding on my part.
Thank you
Based on just a straight forward calculation, not knowing any special considerations for how your school calculates GPAs and assuming an equal number of credits/ equal weight to each year, the junior year GPA would need to be at least a 3.4 to average the 3 years to a 3.0.
There are online GPA calculators available - do an Internet search. They’re a handy tool.
There are probably thousands of different calculations for HS GPA. This varies wildly by school. Some schools only count core required courses. Some schools count electives like band, art, met. Some don’t. Some schools give a different weight to honors and AP courses than other courses.
I personally don’t think your kid should be aiming to just get a 3.0. He should be aiming for getting the best possible grades, with a strong course of study. In other words…all A and B grades. The more A grades he has, the better.
