GPA Reset to zero

Hi all! I’m in a kind of unique position. Almost ten years ago I attended a community college for a handful of courses and did very poorly. Since then I transferred to a university and then graduate school with a very high level of success in regards to my gpa.

Since then an opportunity has presented itself that requires me to go back to school. I want to attend that same community college, but hate the idea of returning and having to start with such a handicap. (Especially embarrassing since some of my coworkers will need to be presented with my gpa at the end of the semester.)

Is it common practice to request a gpa reset when almost a decade has gone by since the last class was taken? How would I go about requesting this if it is even something the school might consider.

Thanks in advance for whatever advise you all might be able to give.

Does your CC have a policy where you can retake courses (probably not what you are aiming to do, but if you are going back and might have to retake some of those classes, it might be relevant) and the new grade replaces the old one? This is what happened to me. I attended a CC, dropped out, but didn’t officially withdraw from the classes. I earned 4 F’s and a D. I thought that would ruin me. Nope. Two years later, I went back, retook the classes, earned mostly A’s, and the grades were wiped out in terms of GPA calculation (though they still officially appear on the transcripts). Not only did this not hurt me, I believed it helped me. I got accepted to all four schools I applied to for transfer (U of Iowa, U of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Beloit C., and my alma mater (like Beloit, a CTCL school)). The schools liked the fact that I had gone back, dedicated myself, and improved.

Again, I know that this is not your exact situation, as you have already gone on to graduate, attend graduate school, and so on. Thus, my question is this: why would you particularly care what your GPA is? I’m guessing that you no longer need the school as an academic stepping stone to transferring, so why not just attend the CC for the reasons needed, kick butt, and be happy with the results? In other words, it is a personal pride thing or will the GPA issue really affect you?

You might also look through the college’s website and catalog to see if they have information about retaking classes and/or grades disappearing after a long period of time. I’m sure others might have better and more concrete answers than I do.

You would be best off talking to the school Registrar. Nobody her can do anything but guess.

But FWIW if you have a bachelors and a graduate degree why return to CC?
