Hey,

I’m going to graduate in june 2014, and I have a couple of questions regarding the admission requirements.

I have an A /3.96 gpa

SAT: R:430 M:530 W:480 ( i know it is awful, but it was my first try) im going to do one in dec

TOEFL: 80 ( i have registered in an exam, also in dec)
I dont do a lot of charity work or community service
I play 3 sports frequently

I am (NOT) an american citizen, but I have studied 7 years in canada.

what are the odds that I will be accepted at a good university?(canada or usa)
what do i have to improve to be accepted (generally) and by how much?
and if you have any additional advice, I would appreciate that
thanks
Baja

How much money can your parents afford?
Where will you be applying?
What country are you from?
Are you attending an English speaking school?
How good at the three sports you play frequently - are you part of team, in a league, does your team win games/championships?

You need to improve your SAT score by 50-100 points AT LEAST.
Use number2 to practice (it’s totally free) https://www.number2.com/exams/sat/companion/index.cfm?s=0
and check out sparknotes to review lessons tested on the SAT.

Your essays will need to be stellar.

We can’t really tell you more than that at this point. Come back here with your list of colleges, answers to the questions above, and your updated stats when you have them.

I will be going on a scholarship from the government, hopefully…
Northwestern, Pennstate, texas a&m, U of toronto, Georgia institute of technology , (btw i forgot to mention that I plan on applying to Industrial engineering)
I am a citizen of saudi arabia and completed highschool (all three years) in saudi arabia.
yes, my school is an english speaking school. (one of the top ranked in the kingdom)
I play these sports for fun (on my own) or in school tournaments.

my brother went through the admission process 2 years ago (also industrial) and told me I needed very high sats (2100+) and very excellent essays/extracurriculars. are they that picky?

regards,
baja

Your SAT is not good enough to get you into most places. You need to find some places that will be happy to take you because you will be full-pay based on your home government scholarship.

Run the college-matching search engines for your major, and then email the international admissions offices at the universities that offer that major. They will be able to tell you what kind of test scores are necessary for students from your country. There are many more places that offer I. Eng. than you have on your current list. If you keep looking, you will find some that might accept you even if your test scores don’t improve.

if I improve my math to a 750 but my cr and writing reman at 500> will that matter a lot? i studied in canada for 7 years… will they take that into consideration?

Yes the CR will still matter, and the Writing might too. If those scores aren’t good enough, you may find yourself in ESL classes for a semester or even longer. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it will mean that you probably won’t finish in only 4 years.

If you haven’t already done so, read through everything at https://www.educationusa.info/ Then pay a visit to the counselors at the advising center closest to where you live. There are several in Saudi Arabia: https://www.educationusa.info/SaudiArabia The counselors there are familiar with your educational system, and they have helped a lot of students find good places to study here.
