Huh? I’ve never heard of that. Maybe it varies by field, but it’s definitely not standard in Computer Science. The admissions committee wants to read as little as possible, so giving them extra paperwork to file and manage is probably not a good idea, especially if the application doesn’t explicitly ask for a separate cover letter. You should be able to work in whatever you’re writing in your cover letter throughout the rest of your application.

I’ve never heard of it either. If anything, I’d hazard to guess it would be formatted like a cover letter for a job application. However, I think it would be overkill to suck up even more in a cover letter, may tick off more people than help you out. It likely varies with field though.

My daughter has to submit a cover letter w/ a grad school application. Besides all the forms and essays, one program wants her to submit a resume and cover letter. She’s had no luck finding example or info on a grad school cover letter. . . I’d hoped to find some info here!

I included one if they asked me to mail things in - many schools prefer online submissions, though, so I think I only sent a cover letter to two schools. It went something like this (with the usual contact information at the top):

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is buki, and I am applying for University’s doctorate program in basketweaving. In this envelope, please find my application and statement of purpose. Additionally, I have requested that transcripts from my previous instutitions be sent directly to you.

I have requested LORs from the following people, and you may expect them shortly:
Dr. Who of Gallifrey
Dr. Jekyll representing Hyde
Dr. Watson, associate of Mr. Holmes

Thank you for your time and attention. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail or telephone.

The bulk of this appliction is submitted on-line to the grad school, but one of the programs she’s applying to wants this resume and cover letter. And, these will be mailed to your location, buki, Cambridge MA!

I think UT Austin has a form for applicants to put into every envelope they send. Maybe it’s just so they know at the first page who it is from, in stead of having to look for some piece of ID’able info. Be sure to include your name, and your SSN and the list of stuff that you send in with the letter. if u r not sure whether that’s only for convenience in processing, feel free to add a little luxury words to make it more like a cover letter.
