Grad School Admissions - CS Minor? [for marine science or oceanography]

College sophomore was advised that to be more competitive for admission into top tier STEM master’s programs they may want to consider picking up a minor in computer science. Student has little interest in CS but is able to add this on if needed.

Hoping for thoughts from others with STEM students in grad school. FWIW they are looking at marine science/oceanography programs.

Here are some prerequisite listings for graduate programs in marine science. Computer science to the level of a minor (as opposed to introductory level understanding and programming skill) is not mentioned.

Thanks for this - she’s researched the pre-reqs for the programs she’s interested in. Same. Hoping for insight from recent applicants/anyone within a program.

I wouldn’t recommend that. Why torture yourself doing something you have no interest in? The best way to get into a good graduate school is to excel in your undergraduate major.

My son is a senior geology major in the process of applying for his PhD. He has had a python class in undergrad, but that is it. He is applying to “top” PhD programs only, including 2 in oceanography, and has no reason to think that only that level of computer science skills will be a negative.

Thank you!
