I am currently an undergraduate music theory/composition major, but I am considering a change in emphasis to a dual emphasis in piano pedagogy and vocal performance.

If I stick with theory/comp, I would want to get my Doctorates and teach at the university level. If I switch, I will probably teach privately, but possibly go to grad school. I feel that if I stick with theory and grad school didn’t work out, I would feel that I wasted my undergrad time and that I didn’t finish what I set out to do. On the other hand, if I switch I would be happy teaching private lessons, but might still want to do more with theory.

My question is, if I switch to pedagogy and performance, would I still have the option of grad school for theory?

By the way, I maintain good grades in theory and aural skills and pick up on theory very fast, so I would still keep up with theory on my own. My biggest concern is that, if I decided to do theory grad school, I wouldn’t have enough of a portfolio for admissions. Does anyone have any personal experience with this sort of situation?
