Grad school transfer

Can a grad student transfer from one department/school to the next without having to reapply again within the same school? This is for a top school.

Graduate school transfers are relatively uncommon (especially compared to undergrad transfers). Additionally, often students must completely start over if they “transfer”.

I’m not sure about transferring between departments at the same school - you should call the specific graduate school and ask. My guess would be unlikely unless you’re trying to switch from for example genetics to molecular biology or very close fields. Also,if you’re in an “umbrella program”, this may make the switch easier. Umbrella programs are frequent in biomedical sciences where you apply to one program but can go into many different subprograms after admittance to the umbrella program (i.e. genetics, biochem, bioinformatics, neuroscience, immunology, microbiology, cell biology, etc). I am not sure if disciplines outside of science have umbrella programs or not, though.

@mademoiselle2308 let’s set you got into a pharmacy/nursing/ school and you wanted to transfer into med school, would you have to reapply?

Page 15-16 of ‘The Idea Factory’ discusses Pepper White’s successful transfer from the MIT TPP master’s program to the master’s program in mechanical engineering, which he eventually completed.

@peterquill I kinda didn’t get why he was successful in transferring. Could you explain the process?

Hey, I didn’t say that I knew how he succeeded.

I’m simply answering your question regarding whether a graduate student can transfer programs. At least in the case of Pepper White, the answer is ‘Yes’.

If you are asking specifically can transfer from nursing or pharmacy to medicine, the answer is no. They have different entrance requirements. You’d have to reapply.

@impoppin In addition to what @eyemgh said, pharmacy school and medical school are not graduate school. They are professional school.

@impoppin As already stated, you’d definitely have to apply separately for medical school.

@peterquill I couldn’t find the part where the kid transfers based on what you sent me.

@mademoiselle2308 what you have said stated before was about graduate schools not professional schools. In my last post I was inquiring about transferring in regards to professional schools.

@AuraObscura those were two different questions. One was pertaining to grad school, the other a medical professional school.

Like I said before, read pages 15-16 of ‘The Idea Factory’, whose Google Books link I included above. Or better yet, borrow the book from your local library and read Chapter 1.

You would have to reapply. Ex. If students switch from econ to ag. econ or from sociology to anthropology. You would want to make the acquaintance of the Director of Graduate studies in the second department along the way.
