Question:
In order to save money, your principal is thinking about canceling all field trips for the remainder of the year.

Essay:
I must say my favorite part of school is going on field trips. It’s usually the same case with other kids. It serves as a reward for working hard in class, encourages them that learning can be fun, and lastly for some it may be the only time they get to go on trips due to finical or parental problems.

When you spend almost half your day sitting in a chair listening to someone talk and give you work, you might wonder what the point is. Field trips serve as a reward for all the boredom they and work they have done. It also encourages them to keep working hard and to stay out of trouble (some schools might have a no referral policy, etc.).

A majority of field trips are related to something they are learning in school. For example in one of my science classes we were learning about population so we went to a nature preserve to learn more about it. Instead of having to learn entirely in the class, it allows kids to get a real world experience on what they are learning about. It would even encourage them to want to learn more about certain subjects.

For many unfortunate kids, the only way they can go on trips is with the school due to finical problems or parents that are unavailable for whatever reason. So the trip not only serves as an educational outlet but also a retreat for some kids.

Field trips not only serve as educational outlets, motivation to keep working hard in school, but also as retreats for the unfortunate kids who do not get to go on trips at home. It would be travesty not to keep field trips.

I’m guessing like a 6-8? I was reading over it after i finished writing it (timed) and i found a couple grammar mistakes right off the bat.

Where’s the essay question?

I can’t tell how well you’ve addressed the task without knowing the task!

All I see is a statement about your principal.

In order to save money, your principal is thinking about canceling all field trips for the remainder of the year. Write an essay persuading him or her to allow students to continue attending field trips. Use specific reasons and examples to support your response.

Sorry

That’s okay.

Give me a moment or two…

The principal is canceling all field trips in order to save money. He wouldn’t disagree with anything that you’re saying, but you’re not addressing it from a financial perspective. It seems like you’re more informing the principal on why field trips are important, rather than persuading the principal of keeping them around. That’s your major fault here, any other error is secondary or tertiary.

This is an odd essay question though, because it doesn’t really give you the opportunity to include outside extended information and it’s a bit too specific for a real SAT essay question. I’m not sure though. Where did you get this?

ESSAY STRUCTURE: 3/6
VOCABULARY: 3/6
SYNTAX: 3/6
USAGE: 5/6

These elements are NOT equal in importance.

Your guess was correct, though. This is a three (a six for two readers).

You are correct that this is probably not a “real” SAT essay question. However, everyone here should be prepared for exactly this kind of question.

CB wants to minimize the extent to which this is a memorization test.

Based on a reading room discussion after the last round, I would guess that prompts like this are on the way.

Thanks, but how would I improve the each of the specific areas of my essay?
To my knowledge i thought the 5 paragraph method was the best way to write it.

How would you approach it?
I got a list of essay questions from my tutor, and i picked this one.

Wait, one thing I don’t get is, why would field trips be considered a financial problem? Don’t students pay for trips, food, and transportation? What type of money would the school be spending?

There’s nothing wrong with using a five-paragraph structure (as long as it doesn’t look like it came from a template you found here).

The term “structure” denotes a LOT more than the number of paragraphs you write.
