Topic :- Can knowledge be a burden rather than a benefit ? ( From SAT Official guide)

Essay :-

Knowledge is very crucial and is the reason why the human race has advanced greatly over time. There are several examples in history where lack of knowledge has lead to people’s downfall.

Marie Curie was a polish physicist who carried research on radioactive materials. During her research she used to store the radioactive substances in her house and left it exposed without storing it properly. As a result she died due to Aplastic Anemia which was caused due to her exposure to radiation. The reason she had not stored the radioactive substances in safe containers was due to the lack of knowledge about radiation in her times.

During the 60s and 70s, lead was used to solder cans which were used as containers for canned foods. It was also used in the interior of pipes. Lead is a metal which if enters the blood even in small quantities can lead to lead poisoning. As a result, people who ate food from these containers and drank water from these pipes suffered from lead poisoning symptoms. Nowadays lead is no longer used to store food or carry water. The lack of knowledge about lead resulted in around 200 deaths in the 1979 – 1988 in the U.S alone.

The above examples prove how important knowledge is and why it should not be considered a burden. Without knowledge we would not have been able to put robots on Mars and found cures for disease like Polio and smallpox.
