Grade my essay, please :D!

Can Knowledge be a burden rather than a benefit?

All people strive to gain knowledge. Although people differ in the types of insight that they seek, they all have a thirst for information. Knowledge can only be a benefit to people and never a harm. By gaining knowledge about America and its land, the Jamestown settlers were able to survive diseases and establish a colony. Furthermore, the knowledge provided by Watson and Crick has helped fuel discoveries in the field of molecular genetics. The impact of knowledge demonstrated by Watson and Crick and the Jamestown settlers supports the concept that knowledge is a benefit.

The Jamestown settlers showed how knowledge is a benefit through their experiences in establishing a colony. At first upon their arrival, the settlers knew nothing about the land and only cared to dig for gold. The first settlers that arrived comprised mostly of men, which made it difficult to establish a new generation. Their lack of foresight and preparation caused most of the early settlers to die from starvation and disease. When the second group of settlers arrived in Jamestown, they strived to learn about the land and sustain life. They explored the land and learned from the mistakes of their predecessors. Instead of just digging for gold, the new settlers tried to find fresh, uncontaminated water and also established a farming community for food. By gaining knowledge about the land, the settlers were able to establish the Jamestown colony and develop into a prosperous town.

Similar to how knowledge served as a benefit served as a benefit for the settlers of Jamestown, knowledge about DNA has also helped scientists today. Watson and Crick were able to discover important information about the structure and sequence of DNA. Their discoveries in the field of Molecular Genetics had prompted many breakthroughs, such as the Sanger method of DNA sequencing. The foundation of knowledge that Watson and Crick provided has helped scientist target diseases on molecular level, which has helped them discover many cures. The knowledge of Watson and Crick led to great benefits in the modern world of science.

Based on the experiences of Watson and Crick and the Jamestown settlers, knowledge provides great benefits to people. As the Jamestown settlers learned about the land, they were able to survive in the New Land and found a colony. Similarly, Watson and Crick’s knowledge on DNA has served as a foundation that many scientists today base off of. Knowledge is very important regardless of what field it is in, because it helped develop for the future.

i disagree. 10/12, because it’s very good, but I would be a bit hesitant to give out a perfect score. good facts, but you should have a third example so you can follow the 5-paragraph essay.

10/12 It is not really perfect. First and most important, the essay lacks advanced vocab.
Second, I would personally develope more throughly on ex2.(Focus more on how knowledge helps the world.),instead of writing a third example.

Thanks for the feedback! :slight_smile:
Do you need a 5 paragraph essay to score a 12? I was told that a 4 paragraph was fine if I explained my examples well enough?
@Tangge
Thanks for the feedback ! :)

Although I have yet to take the SAT, through my practice and studying what various people say about their experiences with the essay and the sample essays given by the College Board, I would argue that five paragraphs are not a requisite for a score of 12. Length is, however, so if you limit yourself to only two examples, be certain that you do go more in depth with them that you would do with three examples. As the evaluators are looking for signs of critical and rational reasoning, limiting yourself to two paragraphs might in fact be a good idea. Many of the sample 12-score essays that the College Board have posted are actually 4-paragraph essays.

you don’t need 5 paragraphs, but it makes it easier, especially if you don’t know what you’re writing about.

not that you don’t, but it will happen if you take the test alot.

I always write 4 paragraphs…
