Are there instances when lying is the more appropriate action than telling the truth?

In everyone’s life, there will be times when lying seems like the better solution to a problem. Yes, it can get one out of trouble temporarily but as the saying goes, ‘honesty is the best policy.’ Never once has honesty complicated matters and in fact, everyone demands for the truth. The following examples will show why lying should never be an option even if it’s for the good of an individual.

Marriage is goal that almost everyone dreams of. The joy of living with a lover while raising children of their own is a classic example of one of the most rejuvenating things in life. While there are prosperous marriages as such, there are also many failed ones, which only bring sorrow and pain to the couple. A big reason to a failure in marriage is usually from the lies within the couple to hide the flaws of both individuals. To avoid a divorce or dispute like this in a marriage, being truthful to one another is the only solution. Lying only postpones the disappointing truth yet to be unraveled and it can aggravate the situation.

Similarly, there was a time when I had forgotten to finish my school homework. Unlike my classmate who lied to the teacher that he had left the homework in his mom’s car, I truthfully confessed to her saying that I forgot it. Although we both got in trouble, my classmate was reprimanded on a bigger scale as he was caught guilty after the teacher called his mom in front of him to verify his words. At that moment I realized that lying definitely wasn’t the best choice in any circumstances.

Lying only brings confusion and distrust between people. Furthermore, even it is done for the better of someone; the truth is bound to reveal itself after time. There is certainly no ‘appropriate’ time to lie and it is only right that everyone should be demanding for nothing but the truth.
