Prompt: Truth is different for everyone.

A well known phrase “history is written by the winners” can dictate what people think of past events. The truth is not objective, but rather is determined by each individual. It is different from each person’s perspective. This is shown in history, through the invention of the telephone, and in literature, in the novel “The Hunger Games”.

When thinking about the invention of the telephone, one name comes to mind. Alexander Graham Bell. He is credited with the invention of the telephone. However, studies have shown that this in not true. While Bell did patent the telephone, he was not the creator. Elisha Gray, much less known than Bell, is the true inventor of the workable telephone. Bell, still a great inventor, heard of Gray’s plans and patented it before Gray did. The truth is written from different perspectives. Those who are seen as the “greats” and “heroes” are the ones who write the “truth”. Were history written from Gray’s perspective, the inventor of the telephone would be credited to Gray.

In the novel, “The Hunger Games”, the government, also known as the Capitol, manipulates history and alters truth. After the war, the Capital takes over. When writing and teaching history, the Capitol states that District 13 never existed and there have only ever been 12 districts. This is a lie. Because history is written by the winners, the winners can manipulate the truth and tell people of things that did or did not happen. If the rebels had won the war, the truth would be different. The people of the nation would know about District 13. This shows that the truth is in fact determined by the individual.

In conclusion, the truth is not object, but rather is determined by each individual. In history, Alexander Graham Bell, the man credited with the invention of the telephone, pushed Elisha Gray, the true creator of the telephone, out of the way and wrote history. Because Bell became the one who is famous, he was the one who wrote the “truth”. If Gray wrote history, the truth would be different. Also, in the book “The Hunger Games”, the Capitol lies to the people and convinces them that District 13 didn’t exist. However, if the rebels were in charge, they would tell their own version of the truth. People see things differently and manipulate it to fit their perspective.
