Some forms of literature are filled with big vocabulary and multiple uses of literary devices while others consists of a few. As a result, there is no such thing as good writing. Writing is subjective part of life. In truth, a form of literature or essay does not need correct grammar or spelling as long as the reader can understand the message the author is communicating.
A timed essays can have several grammatical and spelling mistakes as long as the reader gets the message. Collegeboard admits that the essays that get 12s often have grammar and spelling mistakes, and the students get the 12 because they communicate their message well. This goes to show that having correct grammar and spelling is often overlooked. The message is still clear. If a student has loads of big words that confuse the author, they will get a bad score. Good writing is determined by the overall message and appeal.
In literature, the author often experiment with their styles. Emily Dickinson has many poems that are randomly capitalized. Some authors even have bad grammar in their essays. However, the world deemed these poets and authors some of the best in history. This goes to show that having a work of literature that has a strong message and originality is usually better. There are books and poetry with correct grammar and spelling but their message is often a cliché. How can these people be deemed good authors and poets? Good writing is judged by originality and strong messages rather than correct grammar and spelling.
A person speaking is like an essay or work of literature. Are we not pouring out our emotions when we speak or communicate in writing. People in real life speak with many grammar mistakes and often still have their message understood. That is what determines good writing. It is if the people can get their message out.
Good writing is based on how the message is communicated. Writing well or in other words with correct grammar and spelling is good but expressing the overall message is more important.
