Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority?
Questioning existing dogmas is necessary as it improves existing rules as well as develops individuals’ critical thinking. New thoughts, new plans can change existing ideas of authorities. In order to progress every single new point of view should be taken into consideration. There are many examples of that in movies as well as in books.
No doubt, Disney makes the best-animated films. For example, Mulan. The protagonist, Chinese girl Mulan, breaks the rule which prohibits women to serve in army. Trying to save her father, Mulan dresses up like a man and goes to fight huns. In the end of the movie, it is Mulan who saved Chinese emperor and the entire China. Although she questioned existing traditions and emperor’s will, she proved that women were no worse than men when it comes to defending their motherland.
Another example may be found in a book “Gone with the wind” written by Margarett Mitchell. Scarlet O’Hara, the main character, decides to start up a business, considering the fact that Americans were pretty conservative about women’s role in society at that time. She was judged, and many thought her behavior was ridiculous. However, she continued to develop her start-up. Hence, she brought something new to society – economic equality for both sexes.
Having examined the given issue, I assert that any dogmas, traditions, ideas, even if stated by an authority, should be questioned because it will improve them.
