Is it more important to avoid hurting people’s feelings or to tell the truth?
The right to knowledge is paramount in society. People should always tell the truth rather than deceive others to avoid hurting people’s feelings. This notion is exemplified by Charles Darwin, The Kite Runner, and DNA technology.
First of all, Charles Darwin, the Father of Evolution, illustrates the importance of telling the truth. An intrepid researcher, Darwin explored the Galapagos Islands and discovered the striking similarities of different species of finches and tortoises on the different islands of the Galapagos Archipelago. He postulated that this phenomenon occurred because the species all had a common ancestor and they have adaptively radiated and have adapted to their environments because only the fittest can survive. This was a model of natural selection that was a mechanism of evolution. Darwin later published his substantiated claim in On The Origin of Species, which challenged Creationism and offended the majority of the religious public. However, his findings were supported by empirical evidence, therefore, he was obligated to publish his findings and reveal the truth about organismal biology. His theory later paved the way for biologic research, helping biologists create better evolutionary links to organisms and concoct better antibiotics to treat diseases. Even though it meant challenging the Church, Darwin tells the truth about biology and helps the revolutionize science.
Moreover, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, elucidates the importance of telling the truth rather than avoiding it. The protagonist, Amir, witnessed his friend Hassan’s rape in an alley way. However, Amir did not want to tell Hassan that he witnessed the incident because he did not want to hurt Hassan’s ego and he did not want Hassan to know that Amir betrayed him by not helping him. By not telling the truth, Amir was burdened with ignominy and too embarrassed to talk to Hassan. For the following three weeks, Amir disregarded Hassan and did not want to associate with him. Their friendship for ten years was rifted. Amir and Baba moved to California, and Hassan stayed in Afghanistan. Had Amir told Hassan that he had witnessed the rape without helping, Hassan would have forgiven Amir and they would have lived a happier life together. By avoiding the truth, both their lives were compromised. Demonstrated by this incident, telling the truth is a better option than avoiding the truth.
Finally, DNA CRISPR technology demonstrates the importance of telling the truth rather than avoiding it. DNA CRISPR is a recently discovered enzyme that enables the editing of DNA base pairs. This means that deleterious genes can be edited out with the injection of this protein and many hereditary diseases can be dealt with. However, scientists have decided to tell the public the truths about this technology: it is not morally correct to do this. The public is now aware that by disrupting nature’s balance of good and bad genes, genetic equilibrium is disrupted, and evolution is halted. The public also knows the truth that humans are endangered if there is a homogeneity of good traits because one disease can wipe out the entire species if there is no diversity (this includes “bad” genes). Therefore, the scientific community has done the correct action of telling the public the ominous implications of CRISPR technology so people are able to realize the dangers a process presents and can think for themselves before it is too late.
Elucidated by Darwin, The Kite Runner, and DNA CRISPR technology, it is critical to inform people with the truth to prevent false perceptions that are harmful. People must realize that knowledge of what is really happening is what will help propel our society forward and create a more promising future.
