How important is it to seek the opinions of others when making significant personal decisions?

“The human mind is a suggestion box that takes in the input from out society,” John banes once said. In a world where we live in a social environment, it is vital that we take other’s opinions into account before making personal decisions. Decisions that we make as individuals could have effects upon others. One example is Mark Zuckerberg, Harvard drop out and creator of Facebook. Another example is Jeremy Lin, Harvard graduate and professional basketball player. In both cases, decisions are not made solely by the individuals themselves, but the decisions are made with the help of others.

During the college years of Mark Zuckerberg, he had created, under the advice of others, Facebook; Facebook at the time was asocial gather website where people would rate the most popular females or the most popular style. With the success of Facebook reaching outside the realms of Harvard University, Zuckerberg had a choice to make; he could either take his ideas and develop them outside of Harvard, which would mean he has drop out, or he could finish his studies, risking the chance of another graduate stealing his idea and presenting it to the world. The night before his decision, he asked his friend, Dustin Moskovitz, for his opinion concerning the Facebook conflict. Moskovitz believed that he shouldn’t “sit on a goldmine waiting for others to dig at the idea.” Zuckerberg then terminated his stay at Harvard and set off in the corporate world, without a degree and with less than $1000. The opinion of Moskovitz paid off when Facebook skyrocketed to be the leading social media website in 2008. Sometimes a little bit of time to seek someone else’s opinion is vital not only to ourselves, but also the lives of others that the decision may affect.

As shown again in the history of successful people, Jeremy Lin was a Harvard graduate with the intention to go to Wall Street. However, his passion for basketball told him otherwise. Lin consulted his pastor one night and prayed about the issue; Lin was told to chase his passions despite his dreams for Wall Street. Today, Jeremy Lin has become a motivation and sensation attracting national attention for his play in basketball. Consulting for other people’s opinion is vital. Jeremy Lin could have not chose basketball if not for the opinions his pastors, which would have made Lin miss out on opportunities to change his life.

Opinions are more than just someone else’s thoughts. Opinions are the perspectives of others that shed another light on a decision. Without consulting others for opinions, Jeremy Lin or Mark Zuckerberg would have not made a place for themselves among the elite, influencing the events and development of everyday life of normal people.
