Asst : Do you think that ease does not challenge us and we need adversity to help us discover who we are ?

Essay-
Adverse situations are obstacles, which upon overcoming turn into steps on the ladder to one’s goal. An unchallenged mind is an unchanging mind , one which if not controlled can turn to laziness and procrastination . If one is ever to achieve his goal ,he must work for it ; only with hard work will the fruits of success be satisfactory . Evidence of this statement is seen in Captain Vimes of the Ankh Morpork Watch as well as Gandhi’s struggle against racism.
In Terry Pratchett’s discworld books ,Sam Vimes was a lazy alcoholic with no aspirations and also the captain of the defunct city watch . However, when the Patrician of the city realises he needs more control over the guilds , he decides to put Vimes in charge . In order to make an effective Watch Commander , the Patrician gave Vimes the worst possible tasks imagined and blackmailed and threatened him as well . This stirred up anger in Vimes , which over time turned into a passion to uphold justice and equality in the city . The previously hopeless lowlife now had a happy life married to the love of his life as well as a newfound purpose in life.
The change in the attitude of Vimes was similar to that which came upon in Mahatma Gandhi in his early years . Gandhi , when he was young ,was content with becoming a lawyer and in his twenties, went to South Africa to pursue his career . There, however ,he was persecuted for his skin colour, and once even pushed off a train for the same reason. This madehim eralisehis true passion of bringing justice to the underpriveleged and victims of discrimination . He then went on to stop racism in India and after a long struggle, gained India’s independence.
This struggle brought achange in many others as well, who gave up racism and started to treat the lower castes on the same level, giving them the rights they deserved.
From the examples of Sam Vimes, Gandhi and the people of India who gave up racism , it is clearly seen that adversity changes who we are as well as our perspectives of those around us . Hardships makes one question who he is and everything around him, and leads to the path of self actualisation.
