grades limit what major you can choose?

a comment from studentreviews:
" I got one A and B’s in all of my classes that year, but lacked a sense of fulfillment and pride in my work. I wanted to major in computer science and work in that industry but ended up having to major in mgmt and economics to graduate. "

Is it true that if you don’t make the grade, you can’t major in something? Can’t you just retake the course and graduate at a later date?

There’s no MIT requirement to get a certain GPA to major in a subject – you can, as you’re saying, take as long as you need and re-take classes in order to graduate with the major and GPA you want.

But if people aren’t willing to spend the extra time, or if a technical major is just too difficult, they will generally switch to a management major to graduate on time.

No.

But some people treat management as a fallback major. Which always struck me as a little odd - does someone who needs/wants a fallback major, which usually means someone who is not terribly quantitative, really want to be required to take 6.041, a further statistics class, and 18.06? - but whatever.
