Grades of Your Major Class

Say I wanted to be a pre pharm chem major, and I have a 3.3 gpa. I have had a history of A’s and few B’s in my math and science classes, but have gotten a C in social studies 2 years and B’s in english. How would this play out in the admission process? Obv making up a scenario haha.

A 3.3 GPA may get you a branch campus. Without SAT scores, it is pretty hard to predict.

I’m saying say an applicant has a low gpa, but very high scores in his classes of the selected major, but failed or did poorly on classes not related to major. How would this playout? SAT scores say 1800.

It appears that Pitt is more numbers driven and really looks at total GPA. Pitt’s application is easy, so give it a shot.

Actually my gpa will be much higher than that because of the hard work I’ve been putting in after freshman year, but what do you mean by Pitt’s application is easy? I’m in state student by the way?

Easy to fill out. Sorry. It doesn’t require multiple essays as do so many others.

Well Pitt really does not like to see failing on anyone’s transcript, regardless of the class. Especially considering how much schools like SSOE emphasize well-roundedness (taking electives from A&S), it would not look good to be doing that poorly in unrelated classes. The hypothetical 1800 SAT also doesn’t help because that means the M+CR is only 1200 which is around the bare minimum for Pitt to accept for A&S (and SSOE is much more stringent).

The GPA as it is right now is still on the low side. Pitt says Academic GPA is a “Very Important” factor in selection, along with rigor of course load and SAT/ACT scores. In 2010-2011, 67% of Pitt’s accepted students had a GPA of 3.75 or higher. Only 9% of accepted applicants had a GPA of 3.24 or lower (10% at 3.49 or lower). And only 35% of students had 599 or lower on the SAT CR (22% for SAT Math and 39% for Writing). As it stands, I’d say you have a good chance at a branch, but are a long shot from Main, especially since you’re in state.

By the way, got those numbers from this report: http://www.ir.pitt.edu/cds/documents/CDS2010-11PittsburghCampus.pdf

No this is not my situation haha I just made up a case. My gpa will be much higher than that once i apply.

Pitt also considers the rigor of your courses. A 3.8 GPA for a student with just a few honors classes will not hold as much sway as a student with a 3.6 GPA with all AP and CHS classes.
