If I apply for class 9 in Phillips Andover, will it matter if I got below average marks in 1-2 subjects in 7th grade (for example: 55 out of 100/80)? Will it effect my chances of getting accepted?
Context helps.
In the US, 55 is a failing grade. In India, 55 is a B.
So will an F hurt? Yes. Will a B hurt? No.
If it affects your overall gpa harshly, yes it will hurt you when you apply. But sometimes you can make up for it with a high ssat score, if you have a reason for that bad grade.
Also as ski says, it helps to know your grading scale.
I’d also add that it depends on what happens next, i.e. your 8th grade grades. If you clearly grow and right the ship in those 2 subjects in 8th grade then that’s different than if the 8th grade marks stay low.
Ski is exactly correct. A failing grade most likely will have a really bad impact on your application, even if you get a good SSAT score. If you are in India, and the 55 is a B, I wouldn’t be too concerned especially if you have a good SSAT score.
I am from India so will it effect my application while applying to Andover or no?
The fact that you are from India will hurt you far more than your grades will.
India is a very overrepresented country. Apply to less selective schools if you want to go to BS. Cushing accepts a lot of international students. Try to take the SSAT.
India is nowhere near overrepresented—maybe in the applicant pool, but certainly not among admitted students. In the past 2 years I have known exactly 3 international students from India, 2 of which were U.S. citizens, in a school of 800+.
Speaking of which, are you requesting FA? That will also hurt your chances a lot if so—even my school only has 20 or so international students on FA each year.
i meant overrepresented in the applicant pool.
The fact that a country is over represented in the applicant pool but not among accepted students is a problem for students from that country.
