So I just learned that my school will be putting the final numerical grades on the transcript rather than the letter grades. This is really bad news for me, as although I got straight As my entire middle school, I have a few 94s in my final cards.
Will Exeter, Andover, Lawrenceville, etc. care about this? Will they consider grades numerically or alphabetically?
I don’t think it’ll be a problem, since they receive students from all kinds of schools and therefore should be compatible with different grading systems. A 94(assuming your school goes by an 100 point scale) is an A/A+. Don’t worry, my school also goes numerically. I hope this helps.
But on the report card itself, I am recorded as an A (we don’t do A+). If I had known that Exeter would be sent my numerical grades I would have paid more attention to the numbers. Will this be much of a burden? Do they care as long as it is >93?
What were your SSAT scores? BS’s use standardize testing scores to back students grades. Your A’s should be supported by 90%+ on standardized testing. Besides, most students making all A’s in middle school that go on to a top BS, don’t make solid A’s anymore. Especially at the schools you are looking at.
I wouldn’t worry too much. In fact, it might be more important to realize that even if they were all 100s there is still a chance you won’t be accepted. The top schools accept a limited number of students and most will be applying with similar stats to yours. I am not saying you won’t get in, but I think everyone who applies to those schools should be aware that, even with a terrific transcript, there are no guarantees.
Having said all that, a 94 out of 100 is hardly a “bad” report card. Don’t stress.
You don’t NEED straight A’s. Of course it doesn’t hurt. SSATs and ISEES validate grades or illuminate grades. Straits As and perfect SSATs still don’t get in …it is more complex than that
No, all A’s are definitely not the same… Every school is different (i.e different curriculum, different course, different teaching etc), and schools understand that… A 99% in an average school, and a 90% in a challenging school can be comparable and as such schools view transcripts with a grain of salt…
Oh @Personof2017 you mean at the same school…
Well the fact is that yes they are different and that means they are not waited the same… But I seriously doubt that those couple percents are going to cost you your admissions… Besides if you could have achieved a 99 that would no doubt have been better especially because of your statement earlier :
But now the fact is that whats done is done, and no use crying over split milk… I doubt any serious harm would be caused by a 94 percent and frankly now there is nothing you can do about it… Spend your time of your essays and RELAX
Sorry to do this, but I can’t help myself: it is spelled “weighted” (not “waited”). Keep that in mind if you use that word on any correspondence with top schools…
Just because you have all A’s doesn’t mean anything. The schools will look at the classes you took and the context), SSAT scores and teacher recs. The number in lieu of letter grade is far more accurate as you must know. My son took all honors classes the year before he attended Exeter and did not get all A’s. And numbers and letters were reported.
