grades

Does MIT allow students to retake a class if he/she did badly in that class? And does the original grade get erased if the second grade is better?

You’re definitely allowed to retake a class if you so choose, no question about that.

The academic guide says,

Ways to get around this:

 1. If you take a class as a sophomore under the [exploratory option](http://web.mit.edu/uinfo/academics/grading/grades/class.html#soph), you can choose whether to keep or reject the grade you get at the end.
 2. Drop Date is late enough in the term that if you’re doing poorly in a class and anticipate getting a bad grade, you can drop without penalty and retake the course later.

woo! exploratory 8.033 baby.
