Does anyone know how grades work at Stanford?? Are there pluses and minuses attached to grades??? what does each letter (with or without +or -) equate to on the 4.0 scale??

There are pluses and minuses. A is 4.0, B is 3.0, etc. Also, courses are worth different numbers of units (1,3,4, or 5) and are weighted accordingly in contributing to the GPA.

Do pluses and minuses factor into the GPA, though? I think that’s the question…

yes

How the General University GPA is Determined
Grade points are assigned to letter grades. The grade points associated with each grade are as follows:
A+ 4.3
A 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
D- 0.7
NP 0.0

Hmm, so it’s actually possible to get above a 4.0 (not that it’s easy)…

I doubt it’s doable over the course of your four years, though, even if you completely cede your life… unless you’re a fuzzie, haha.

No, but seriously… what’s a respectable GPA for a Stanford student? (Especially one in a science major, like, say…physics…who wants to go to grad school?) 'Cause in HS, I always aimed for a 4.0, and it was totally doable, but I’ve heard that it’s not the same in college… so I basically just want to know what to expect.

this question maybe totally silly, but…
does the GPA only reflect courses in one’s major?

dumb…i know
but bear wit me lol

I know that you have a “major GPA” and an “overall GPA” that I think are both on your transcript… and I think med schools calculate a “science GPA” too.

I’ve always heard the average GPA at Stanford is around a 3.4 (B+), and a good GPA (for a pre-med at least) is a 3.7 (which is about the average GPA for applicants accepted to top med schools).
