Hello everyone,
Can anyone tell me how College of Engineering grading system work ? they give average score and standard deviation… how can you tell that you are doing good then others ? and what is good GPA ? 3.0 or above ???

I am a transfer student and this is my first semester at UM CoE. let say if you are below the average always than what will be your GPA ?? what is std dev. mean to me ? and thank you for reply !!

3.5+ is decent.
entry level class B- average, 1 SD is a grade.
upper level required class average between B/B-, 1 SD is a grade
upper level elective class average range from B- to B+, 1 SD is a grade

There are quite a lot of duds in the college no matter what majors you are in so being ahead of the curve in every class should be given if you strive to be “good”

thank you for reply bearcats and MLDWoody.
So, if you are below average but within 1 SD then you more likely to get C right ?? I understand that above the average is always a good thing. But for now if you can explain more about below the average thing that might be helpful. like two tests score are below average and home work is going average so what’s my GPA look like ? and one more question Does students get “D” in classes ??

It all depends on the grading in your class. They might be on a straight scale or they may curve the class. And if they curve the class it’ll depend on what they are curving in to.

Your GPA is all of your classes, so idk what you mean there.

I think you can get a D, idk. You need to get at least a C- (or C for some majors) in all of your introductory classes

Professors are usually much more lenient on the low side. So while 1 SD above is a grade above, they make the ranges much wider on the low side and really refrain to giving Ds and Fs. I have taken my IOE classes , a few EECS classes and some other engineering classes and it seems like most professors are pretty good about this.
The only exception where I see professors are really willing to D, F people is MechEng235 (Thermo), but that class is really easy anyway. The concept is really simple and if you dont do well on the exams, it just means you didnt learn jack doing the homework/or copied your homework.

Some people (MEs and non-MEs) complain about this class being hard, but it really is not. The only reason why people find it hard is because they don’t do their homework, but instead just copy from each other/cramster etc. Ridiculously number of people (like 90%) score 100% on their homework every time, but the exam averages are low. The problem is, the exams are almost like the homework problems, just a little longer/more components. So obviously a lot of people don’t actually understand their homework… you have to wonder why people score 100% on their homework without understanding anything!

I had 2 exams so far. Got 100 on the first one and I know I got 95+ on the second one that is about to be given back. The average was 70 I think but as I said, if you actually do your homework, this class is a piece of cake.

btw Kevin Pipe is a great instructor. This is the only few class i have taken over my 4 years at U of M where I felt I actually learned anything from lecture instead of just reading textbooks/notes

and while we are on the topic of ME classes, ME 211 with Jwo Pan was the crappiest class I have ever taken at U of M, and I have taken a fair share of crappy classes here. The guy has no consistency, one exam with average of 65, another one which was basically a copy of the practice exam with different numbers with average of 85+, then a super hard final with average in the 50s. The guy also cant teach his way out of a paper bag.

a lot of students get 100% on HWs cuz there are HW solutions floating around. Like it ME240 last semester, the HW avg was like 98% every time, but when it comes to exams, the average drops to mid 50s.

"The mean on the final exam was 60, s.d. 20. The final average for the class was 67, s.d. 17. "
Pulled this message from announcement on ctools. This class is curved to a B-, does that mean a lot of people got A’s and C’s? Worst crappiest ME professor so far out of the 8 I have taken.
