hey guys…i was just wondering about how the grading at ucla works. i’m still trying to make my decision about where to go (a little last minute) and i wanted to know if grades are based on 1-2 big tests each quarter or if there are other factors. thanks.

For most college courses anywhere, the grade will be based heavily on 1 or 2 midterms and the final. For humanities courses, the grades may be based on a few big essays instead of tests, and for courses like computer science the grade may be based on programming projects instead of tests, etc.

But the main fact is, big assignments or tests will account for the bulk of your grade at any school, so it’s not really a good thing to base a decision on. Besides, there’s such a wide range of courses at UCLA that there’s really no “standard” grading system, some professors will allocate 10 or 20% to smaller assignments or etc, some courses will be as extreme as 50% final and 50% midterm.

It’s usually spread like this for math classes:

~10% homework assignments
~25% first midterm
~25% second midterm
~40% final exam
