I am a freshman enrolled in the Olin Business School at Washington University in Saint Louis. My degree is a business degree with a major in Economics & Strategy (a business major), and planning to 2nd major in Math (in the ArtSci School) and a minor in Applied Statistics (Math).

Before, I was thinking of applying to a graduate Business School and get an MBA, but now I'm thinking towards a PHD in a very reputable Economics school (and possibly do research at a University or work for government).

My question is, is it harder to get into a good Econ graduate program (non-business) if my undergraduate degree is a business degree instead of an ArtSci degree? Should I switch into ArtSci and get an ArtSci degree (cuz I heard a lot of people saying an undergraduate business degree looks very soft).

A lot of them primarily care about your math grades, and the fact that you have a lot of math. The Phd programs for economics are incredibly difficult to get into so you have to have a very high GPA if you are applying to top flight schools. You should take as much math as possible, generally a minimum of the whole calculus sequence and linear algebra is required, all with A’s and an occasional B. You should look at this forum:
