Graduate Housing and Parking

I have a child who is considering Kenan Flagler for graduate school. I am curious how difficult it is to find nearby parking and housing this spring for a summer start. They will have a roommate. My experience with other colleges make me believe this will be a difficult task!

Ideally, housing would be walkable with parking available. Second option would be getting on campus parking and commuting. I guess third option would be finding housing with a dedicated campus shuttle or on a bus line.

Any suggestions for housing or parking recommendations. Are you more likely to get parking if you apply for certain lots? Is there paid parking available near UNC that is not affiliated with the university? This is the best way to get parking at UGA so I wonder if it’s also a possibility there.

Our daughter is there now as a first year student in the MBA program. She looked at the graduate housing and said that it was pretty dated, with small rooms. There are many nice, new apartments being built in Chapel Hill now. She rented one that’s about 10 minutes away from campus, but on the bus line. There is a lottery for parking passes, and she got one, so she drives to campus every day. It’s easy to find housing.

Grad students also live in Carrboro and there is a bus to campus.

There is also at least 1 parking garage within walking distance to the campus that is not affiliated with the school.

There is metered street parking and many of the off campus homes have street parking.

There are area apartments with parking for tenants that are on one of the bus lines. Some are within walking distance.

As noted, it is easy to find housing.
