Graduate school admission criteria

Hello,

what is the criteria for excellent graduate school admission like Harvard Medical School or MIT Engineering School?
Does it depend on your high school performance like extracurriculars or only on your GPA and of course undergraduate performance? Why is for example the Harvard Med School that competitive (about 3%)? What makes it that rigorous?

Thanks

@carloConfidential high school anything almost never factors into admission for graduate school, at least to my knowledge.

Undergrad GPA, course rigor, letters of recommendation, any research or research papers you’ve worked on or written, and standardized tests (e.g. GRE, GRE subject tests, MCAT) usually are the more important factors.

Harvard is competitive because there are a lot of applications and only a limited number of seats.

Admission criteria for medical school are very different than for a PhD program. In neither case do extracurricular activities play much of a part. Instead it is the professional preparation. For medical school, it is important to demonstrate your intent to be a physician with the kinds of activities you seek outside formal courses. For a PhD, research experience is critical.
