graduate school for art history?

Hi Forks,

After working as an engineer for 10 years, I find out what I am doing now is not my passion. My passion is visual arts. I am seriously considering to go back to school for a degree and change career after. My first option is art history. I’d be happy to work in museums or galleries. But I want to know how hard it will be for me to apply for graduate school in art history because I don’t have any background in this area. I was good at researching and academics, but it is hard to find people in art domain to write recommendation for me. What should I do to make this easier? Volunteer in museums will help? Please advise. Thanks.

Volunteering in museums will be helpful, but the most important thing is that you will need to have taken some art history classes, preferably with a research project (thesis, seminar paper) as well as AT LEAST one of the following foreign languages: German, French, and/or Italian.

Go to the web sites of various graduate art history departments and read their admissions requirements. They are not always very specific, but I do recall several which indicated just how much undergraduate coursework in art history was required for admittance.
