Graduate School + Health Insurance

D1 will exhaust her military eligible health insurance (tri-care young adult) when she turns 26 in December. She is ADD, so has a “pre-existing condition” but is otherwise a healthy, non-smoker, social drinker. She is currently attending SIPA at Columbia University in NYC.

What are my choices?? USAA DOES NOT cover the ADD meds. I have encouraged her to buy the schools upgraded health insurance policy when tri-care runs out, at least until I figure out something else.

Has anyone has experience insuring an ADD young adult? I am open to suggestions. Thanks.

My daughter’s state of residence is Alaska

Is she a member of any professional organization? I was a student member of IEEE in college and I never used it, but they offered insurance. Maybe something like that?

Does this link work for you?

ADD meds are cheap at Walmart and Target etc. ($10 a month, I think) if you get generic stuff. Might be cheaper just to keep the school insurance and pay meds out of pocket?
