My dad is telling me he is buying me a new laptop as a graduation present (along with helping with the basic necessities). I’ve looked through the threads and while I usually use windows I’ve always enjoyed the slick and efficiency of macs and I hear you can run windows in macs (don’t know how that works exactly). Do you think a Mac is worth it and if so is the Mac book air enough for a neuroscience (going premed) major?

It all depends on how long you want this laptop to last you. I’ve used both operating systems and while I have gotten used to the platform and how useful it is, I don’t see any advantages to Windows and vice versa. Physically speaking, it is quite difficult to compare other laptops to Apple’s build quality, with competitors like the Lenovo Yoga Pro and such not having that same quality or “touch” (for a lack of better words) that Apple manages to convey in their product. I also want to highlight the fact that a Mac holds its value rather well compared to it’s Windows’ brethren, so you should also factor that into your decision (You can sell it later down the line and upgrade.)
All in all,
Just go with the laptop that fits your budget and one that you feel works well (Go try laptops out in boutique computer retailers [Fry’s, Apple, Microsoft] Avoid Best Buy and other “big box” retailers, they don’t have knowledgable employees or warranties like those provided by the other smaller retailers).
