Son is a senior engineering major and was scheduled to graduate in April. However, he made a mistake and will not be able to graduate on time. Some how when scheduling he did not figure in all the credits he will need to fulfill the graduation requirement. He still will need six credits for his open electives. Can anybody answer whether or not these can be taken at our local community college or whether they have to be taken at Pitt? It will be much more cost effective for us to come up with the extra money if they can be taken at our local community college. It will only run us about 1800 out of pocket vs around 5000 if they have to be taken at Pitt. I realize we will need to talk to his advisor, but with the holidays it cannot be done for about two weeks. I would appreciate it if anybody can answer this. Thanks.

Depends on the college and the credits taken, unfortunately. You really do need to talk to an advisor at Pitt because they are very specific on

A) which colleges they accept transfer credit from
and
B) Which classes AT said colleges they accept transfer credit from

A thought- depending on his schedule in his last semester (I know mine was a bit more open) he may be able to double-enroll at CCAC at the same time (not sure if he can, but he may be able to get away with taking night classes there) in which case he could still feasibly finish in April instead of August. Just a thought to check out. Best of luck sorting it all out! Definitely contact the advisor as soon as he gets back to Pitt on Jan 6

Like most schools, UPitt has this rule:

“To receive a University of Pittsburgh degree, you must complete, at a minimum, your last 30 credits at the University of Pittsburgh.”

Thanks for the replies. He currently has either 100 or 101 credits. Awesome, thanks for the suggestion on night classes, but unfortunately he is going to be carrying 18 credits already this coming semester. I am already concerned that this is going to be to much. We talked briefly with a counselor the other day and she said it is not a good idea for him to be carrying this coarse load. He is insisting it is not to much, he will be taking a senior design class,an introductory psych class, and some kind of fairy tale class, as well as two other classes. He said they all should be fairly easy. I am concerned because his gpa has dropped below 3.0 . our idea is to get him through in the most cost effective way, but still trying to keep the gpa from tanking any further. He loves Pitt and has enjoyed his last 4 years there. His dad and I are just ready for the college days to be over, and that first job to be started. He is a Computer Engineering major. He is also going to be looking into taking those last 6 open elective classes at Alleghany Community College, if Pitt will let him due this to complete their degree requirements.
