Grammar Question

Yeah, I know this isn’t a homework help forum, but this isn’t homework. I was arguing with my friend about this today at lunch.

Is the following sentence grammatically correct?

“93% of Americans have seen or been involved in a car crash at some point in his or her life”

or would I use a different pronoun at the end?

I know it sounds awkward, but I believe it is correct following guidelines.

“93% of Americans have seen or been involved in a car crash at some point in **his or her **life”

Shouldn’t you use their instead?

I think it’s “…in their lives,” but I’m not so sure.

Since Americans is plural, “their” should be used.

^^Agreed .

You’re talking about like 288 million people, so yes, you would use “their.”

Technically, percentages are amounts, and amounts amount to nothing (i.e., they take singular verbs). “93% of Americans is…”

I’d say it’s “their”. You wouldn’t say “half of Americans is”.

Or you could omit the ending, “at some point in his or her life”, because it can easily be implied.
