1)The coach chose Amanda to run the final lap of the
relay, since her time was better than either Gwen or
Christine.
(D) that of either Gwen or Christine
(E) either that of Gwen or that of Christine
2)1 1 . Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is one of the most
popular classical recordings available, since this is
the case, the CD is frequently back-ordered.
(A) since this is the case, the CD is frequently
back-ordered
(E) which means that the CD is frequently
back-ordered
3)Those paying by check (are having to wait) A seven
days to receive their tickets, (whereas)B those paying
(in)C cash can pick theirs up (immediately)D. No error
The answer is A and I know that it is wrong but when I looked at choice c I thought here is a parallelism error. By check so by cash not in cash
Is this a real question? Both are grammatically acceptable (as written), but (D) is shorter so I’m guessing it’s the answer. But I haven’t seen a CB question that tests this particular style difference without also throwing in an actual grammar error in one of the choices.
(E) because (A) is a comma splice: IC comma DC comma IC.
That’s not a parallelism error because “pay by cash” isn’t idiomatic.
It is a kaplan test @marvin100. But i have a question. In number 2, which doesnt refer to anything here and the ultimate guide mentioned that there should be an antecedent for any which. I am confused
I know that which refer only to nouns or pronoun
In the ultimate guide book, a sentence was given : Australian Jessica Watson became the youngest person ever to sail around the world, which she achieved in March of 2010.
She said that this is incorrect. Why is this incorrect while in my question it is correct
Yes, I ditched the Kaplan, but I don’t know what to replace it with. I was looking for complete practice tests for the Redesigned SAT:
What do you recommend as practice material for the Redesigned SAT? As I have been discussing on the other thread, I am disappointed with what I have seen thus far of the Khan Academy material.
@Plotinus, I assume your are an SAT instructor… do you recommend that current juniors use these Khan SAT practice tests to prep for the upcoming PSAT? There is not much available for the newly designed PSAT? My son is taking it in a few weeks and has done what he can with the Khan stuff… we are chasing merit so would love to focus on the most productive materials in the next 2 weeks.
I don’t know the right answer to this question. I think students like your son are in a difficult position. If he wants to go for broke on the PSAT, the best I can say is he should do ALL the official material that has been released by College Board (the 1 PSAT and the 4 SAT’s), plus all the 4-level Khan material. I think the Khan material is different from the College Board material in certain ways, but I haven’t yet found anything better. I am writing my own material using many different sources (some old SAT’s, some ACT material, some Khan questions, some fake problems I wrote myself using the CB Redesigned tests as models, etc.) However, I can’t do it as well as the CB can. I would much rather pay $60 for the old Online Course and let College Board write the questions and supply the complete practice tests.
You should also consider that if CB doesn’t publish any more practice SAT’s before March or May, your son won’t have any complete tests left to practice with for the SAT in the Spring. So you have to weigh whether you want to use up all the official material for the PSAT. It is a risk. You might want to save some tests for the Spring.
Thanks @Plotinus. The CB really screwed the class of 2017. Our plan is for him to take the PSAT (using what is available), and possibly the old SAT in December. I was going to wait for the PSAT results to see if he was close to the old cutoffs before scheduling the Nov or Dec SAT, but now realize that the PSAT results won’t come in for 2 months! So, we are likely going to have him prep as much as possible for PSAT, take the OLD SAT in case he does quality for NMS (he’d have it done) and then ditch CB for ACT. He did official practice tests (at school) for both already this May of Sophomore year and the school is saying the SAT vs ACT scores are pretty much the same, so he should focus on ACT. Which he will, if he doesn’t qualify for NMF. Do you think this is a good plan?
I think it is a very good plan, but I would recommend he take the old SAT in January. For some reason people always seem to do really well in January.
If he won’t be taking the new SAT, he should definitely do all 4 practice tests to prepare for the PSAT.
Just my opinion, but there is no reason for anyone who studies properly to get only 680 in writing (old SAT). He is not studying properly if he can’t clear 700 at least. He should try to push that to 730-750. It isn’t hard. He should do ALL the writing sections in the Blue Book and the SAT Official Online Course (quizzes and practice tests), reviewing his mistakes each time.
ok - I will get those. Honestly, I didn’t even know they existed- he just did the Khan PSAT practice test. Assuming they have to be bought (the 4 practice tests)? and the online courses)?
FYI- those scores are with zero prep or even a thought to testing. He probably put no effort into the writing, knowing it was practice. His school automatically does a baseline in May of Sophomore year and provides the analysis. He ran out of time for ACT Science (the last 8 were all guesses) - so I think he would have been a higher score.
