Loved Ben Platt and Patti LuPone too! I’m really enjoying the show this year.
Back in my teens I saw Patti Lupone in the Evita role on Broadway so it brought back memories.
I just read the other day that Spielberg is doing a West Side Story remake so I don’t think that song choice was too random. Platt performed nicely.
SZA was robbed! I love Bruno, he never disappoints!
Music is fine…but I think the staging this year is meh.
Bruno is my boy toy crush!
I thought the show was boring, and, even though i agree with him, it was rude of Bruno Mars to complain about the number of ballads.
Younger musicians have a lot to say!
Highlights for me:
Kendrick Lamar (powerful!)
Kesha (POWERFUL!!)
Childish Gambino (Donald Glover)
Logic with Alessia Cara (I was in tears)
I was surprised at how much of the music tonight I enjoyed (seeing as I’m a fogie) -
And yep, gonna see Sir Elton’s Farewell Yellowbrick Toad - I’ve seen him live once each decade from the early 70s. Wouldn’t miss it!
I had to stop watching about 10:15 to hit the sack for work in the morning…what did Bruno say about too many ballads? I do have it recorded so may buzz through tonight to finish out the show.
What a great show last night . Memorable moments ! Uplifting
Ditto x2.
@abasket Here’s the clip and a story …

Yeah, I found it pretty uninteresting as well. I heard little that I’ll add to my playlist, too.
ratings way down.

Have y’all seen this? I’m mad on Lorde’s behalf …

Well – I’d rather have seen that U2 performance than anything anyone else did last night. So at least in that respect, I think that article is off base.
Waaay too political. The preaching is getting tiresome. Music provides me a diversion from the state of the country.
personally, I don;'t mind the preaching so much as the hypocrisy (as much of certain music genres are misogynistic.).
Isn’t that what so much of music is about? “Preaching”? Taking a political or values stance? Not everything is a love song! As long as all sides that want to be represented are allowed I think that is what music has always been about. And acting. It’s a form of expression.
If you want to get down on the “extras” - like skits - that are politically geared I can understand that, but not the music itself - and the artist represents the music and vice versa - so when they hit that podium, you’re going to hear from them.
Most Rap and Hip Hop is now the rock equivalent of Hair Metal. Out of ideas and lacking in quality.
The roots of our modern musical history are in political statements. Think of the blues, of jazz. And then there was the music of the 60’s. It’s hard to imagine where our music would be without politics.
I thought the skit in the subway was cute. There was a video earlier this year where the Cleveland cavaliers rode the subway and Lebron James was recording them. The people on the subway reacted almost exactly like the skit. Including one guy pushing Lebron’s phone away from him. It was so New York. Can you imagine being on the subway with a bunch of really tall guys (and Lebron!).
I thought that U2 were great. Powerful and visually stunning. And I thought the quartet of country singers singing tears of heaven was very touching.
Wish I had seen Bruno Mars, they are great.
