Grand Canyon University

We are a family of a current nursing student, and our experience with Grand Canyon University has been challenging in ways we did not fully anticipate during the decision-making process.

GCU has a very strong national recruiting presence, particularly for students who live far outside of Arizona. The messaging during the admissions process is highly visible, polished, and appealing, especially to students who are excited about attending school in a new environment. However, in our experience, that initial impression did not reflect the level of logistical responsibility students are expected to manage independently once enrolled.

One of the most significant challenges has been the lack of support around clinical logistics. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to clinical sites, which can be located at varying distances (sometimes as far as 200 miles from campus), often with limited notice regarding schedules. While this may be disclosed during enrollment, the practical reality of coordinating transportation, housing, and timing, especially for students coming from out of state, is far more complex than it appears upfront.

In addition, there seems to be limited structured support to help students navigate these requirements. Students without access to a vehicle must rely on informal arrangements such as carpooling, which can be impossible to coordinate given the variability of schedules. For a program with significant clinical demands, this lack of infrastructure is surprising.

We have also experienced communication that is more reactive than proactive. Key logistical details are often provided close to when they are needed, which makes it difficult to plan ahead, particularly for families who are not local to the Phoenix area.

From our perspective, there is a noticeable gap between the way the university presents the student experience during recruitment and the level of support available once students are on campus. For families making a significant financial commitment, especially those traveling from out of state, this is an important consideration.

We would strongly encourage prospective students and families to ask very detailed questions about clinical and internship logistics, transportation expectations, and available support systems before committing. In our experience, the visibility and reach of the university’s recruiting efforts are not matched by the level of ongoing support students receive once enrolled.
