Grandfather was a Professor Emeritus at a top university. Does this affect chances?

I am asking this for a friend of mine, whose grandfather was a Professor Emeritus at a tippy-top university (think HYPSM). Does this help my friend get into the university? My friend has a 99th percentile ACT, decent ECs, Captain of sports team, 4.0, but does this help my friend get in?

At that school, it’s very likely yes. Otherwise, only mediocre personal statements and LORs might lessen his/her chances – but certainly your friend will get many acceptances
