Granola

I want to make granola to send to my kids. My first attempt the granola was tasty but I think it needed to be crunchier. I used oats, coconut oil and honey and coconut flakes. Plus nuts and flax seed. I cooked it at 300 for 30 minutes.
Suggestions? Should I have cooked it longer. Secrets to a crisp crunchy granola?

I make this recipe all the time and my kids are addicted to it (me too!). I often add a little more nuts and definitely don’t add the dried fruit till it is cooling. I love it with dried cherries! Great with yogurt or milk. Crunchy!!! Easy!!!

Also, old fashioned oats are better to use than the quick oats .

I make the Vegetarian Times Maple Walnut granola. I used to serve it when I ran a B&B and have also given it as holiday gifts, always to rave reviews. It’s easy to sub in different fruits, nuts and spices to keep it interesting; my favorite is with crystallized ginger, craisins and hazelnuts. DH eats it every night mixed with almond butter.

I make this one and I love it! [Almond Maple Granola Recipe - Allrecipes.com](http://allrecipes.com/recipe/almond-maple-granola/) I add Chia seeds and flax meal instead of wheat germ.

My D loves chia seeds, I bought some to put in the flea biscuits I make for the dog.
I like granola with lots of nuts, I wouldn’t think to make it myself though.

Granola is expensive. The ingredients that are in Granola are not. There’s quite a savings in making your own and, bonus! You can add as much nuts as you want to!

I make my own granola with walnuts and almonds and pumpkin seeds. All are very good for cholesterol. I also put in dried blueberries but it is important to put them in after the baking is done or else they will wind up jaw breakers. I also use virgin coconut oil instead of vegetable oil.
The key to crunchy is too bake it at low heat but longer. I use 275 degrees for 1.25 hours.
I love making my own because i can control the sugar, i find it doesn’t have to be as sweet as the recipes call for to be just as good. A dollop of yogurt and almond milk makes a delicious breakfast!

Just made abasket’s granola. Yum! We had it with some homemade vanilla ice cream. Very quick and easy. We went apple picking at the weekend. Would be a great as a topping on some stewed apples.

Glad you liked it Sally!!
